آب غنی از هیدروژن به‌عنوان یک ضد‌اکسیدان ساده بازاریابی می‌شود، اما یک آزمایش تصادفی و دوسوکور در افراد مبتلا به بیماری مزمن کوهستانی نتایج مخالف را نشان داد. پس از ۸ هفته مصرف ۹۹۰ میلی‌لیتر در روز، مقدار MDA – نشانگر آسیب اکسیداتیو – در گروه هیدروژن نسبت به گروه پلاسیبو به‌طور معناداری افزایش یافت (+۲٫۱۱, p < 0.001). ظرفیت کل ضد‌اکسیدانی نیز ارتقا یافت و افزایش MDA در افراد با BMI ≥ ۲۴ واضح‌تر بود. عوارض جانبی (به‌ویژه سرگیجه) در گروه آب هیدروژن بیشتر گزارش شد (۵۰٪ در مقابل ۳۷٪). این مطالعه کوچک و مختص جمعیتی خاص بود، بنابراین نتایج آن را نمی‌توان برای همه تعمیم داد.
